Volvo adds missing Apple CarPlay to newer models

Apple CarPlay connectivity is now available on models using the Android Automotive operating system, the infotainment software implemented in new Volvos from 2021

Volvo has issued a new over-the-air update for newer versions of its cars that use infotainment systems based on the Android Automotive operating system, and this latest update includes a feature that has been missing since the brand ditched its own software platform for the development of Google.

Native Apple smartphone integration has been missing from Volvo’s Android Automotive infotainment systems since its introduction, and it was something we pointed out when we first got acquainted with the impressive setup during our first drive of the all-electric Volvo C40 on last year.

Now, however, iPhone users can bridge the gap to mirror their iOS devices to the Android system, though only via a wired connection with a USB cable; wireless CarPlay integration has not been confirmed.

Volvo has been issuing over-the-air updates since early 2021, and the brand estimates that its previous update, issued in April 2022, was successfully downloaded by almost 200,000 new Volvo vehicles worldwide.

The new update is now available to download in the UK, so Volvo car owners using Android Automotive OS can activate CarPlay connectivity at any time.
